What is WordHalo?
WordHalo is a free Chrome browser extension for language learners. When you highlight a word or short passage on a webpage, it shows a translation into your language, a learner-friendly definition, an explanation of what the text means in that exact sentence, and pronunciation audio — in a small card beside the text, so you never leave the page.
What does WordHalo do?
- Explains any word or passage (up to 500 characters) you highlight on an ordinary HTTPS webpage.
- Detects the language of the highlighted text automatically — you only choose one setting: “My language.”
- Shows a translation, a definition written in simple vocabulary, and an “In Context” explanation of what the text means in that sentence.
- Plays pronunciation audio using your browser's speech features.
- Saves words you want to keep into an on-device library, organized by detected language, with flashcards and learning games for review.
What does WordHalo cost?
The free plan is available now and includes unlimited English dictionary definitions, 15 AI reading helps per day, automatic language detection, pronunciation audio, the on-device word library, and flashcards. No account is required. Paid plans (Companion and Fluent) are published as a preview on the pricing page but cannot be purchased yet — no payment is collected today.
What makes WordHalo different?
- Reading comes first. Help appears beside the text you highlighted, not in a new tab, popup window, or separate app.
- One language setting. You state your language once; WordHalo detects what you are reading, so one install covers every language you read.
- Privacy by design. The extension activates only when you highlight text, asks consent before the first request, and does not collect full URLs or browsing history. It requests only Chrome's storage permission.
- Honest limits. AI explanations can be wrong; WordHalo says so in its AI disclosure and encourages verifying important information.
What is WordHalo not?
- It is not a full-page translator — it explains the specific text you choose.
- It is not a course or curriculum — it supports the reading you already do.
- It is not available on mobile or other browsers yet; the first release targets Google Chrome. Mobile apps are planned but not available.
